Welcome back to a new and exciting school year at Perham-Dent! And welcome to our new monthly newsletter that will be distributed throughout the year to keep parents, alumni, families, school staff, community members and business owners in touch with and up to date on foundation happenings! Each newsletter will share current events and upcoming plans, grant information, tidbits about board members and how you can be part of the growing movement to keep our school district great!

Congratulations to the Kid’s Kamp District #549 Latchkey Program which received a $1000.00 grant over the summer. With the additional funds, Kid’s Kamp plans to provide books and materials to improve and enhance literacy and character; and develop individuals’ creative and problem solving skills. These supportive materials will help the emotional climate of the program and offer needed structure.

Any district employee, school organization or school volunteer can apply for a grant to benefit a cause for ISD 549. Simply go to www.549family.com, click “Grant Application”, download the application, complete and get the necessary signatures on the back page. Grant applications can be dropped off at any school to the attention of coordinator, Jo Strege, PWMS.

Annual 549 Family members will be receiving their annual renewals shortly in the mail. New members will find enrollment information on the back of the new ’05-’06 district calendar. Call 347-0549 anytime with your questions!!

HOMECOMING: 549 Family plans to join in for the planned parade. At the game, get your coupon for free coffee or hot chocolate by stopping by at our tent to say “hi”. Also, be watching for special recognition to past royal alumni.

The PHS Student Council is organizing students to help with the local TELETHON. Donations will go to the 549 Family Foundation to benefit ISD#549 students through its grant program. The TELETHON is scheduled on October 8th & 9th. Volunteering students will call area residents to ask for a small donation. If you receive a call and do not wish to donate, we simply ask that you decline politely. Many plans are in the works for the TELETHON and we hope to make it an exciting event for the community. More and more school programs are seeking our help each year and your support is much appreciated!

Meet 549 Family Board Member, Dean Bahls

Dean was raised in Perham and graduated from Perham High School class of 1984. After he and his wife, Rhonda, lived in Fargo for a few years, they were happy to be able to come “back home” to raise their 2 kids, Sydney, almost 6 and Nick, who is 9 and starting the 4th grade.

Dean is employed with CC & I Engineering and Rhonda works for MSCTC, both in Perham.

So why is the 549 Family Foundation so important to Dean and his family? Dean says, “I think my support of 549FF stems from the positive influence that Perham schools offered me. There are many terrific programs that would be lost or diminished if not for the support of efforts such as those offered by 549 Family.

WON’T COST YOU A CENT!

Box TopsBox Tops for Education are found on literally hundreds of General Mills products. Each little 1” wide coupon is worth 10c to the school. Recycle Cartridges for KidsComputers have become a household staple. The ink cartridges for our printers take more space in the landfills every year, but these cartridges can be recycled and make the school money at the same time. School District 549 takes part in the Cartridges for Kids program. Used cartridges are sent in to be refilled and the school is paid for the empties. CFK accepts all size cartridges, printer toner cartridges and even used cell phones. For a complete listing, visit their website at cartridgesforkids.com. Drop your cartridges at any of the following drop sites where they are collected monthly and packed up and sent from PWMS by students: All 4 district 549 school buildings, Perham Printing, Perham Area Chamber office, United Community Bank, Arvig offices, Farmers Bank of Dent, Carr’s Market in Ottertail, and Vergas State Bank. Cartridges = Cash for the school!
